This photograph was taken at Shawnee Park Lake in Kansas during the appearance of Comet C/2023 A3. The stillness of the water and the subtle glow in the sky created a calm setting that allowed the comet to quietly stand out. I was drawn to the balance between the landscape and the night sky, and capturing that relationship was just as important to me as photographing the comet itself.
I came across this caterpillar while it was working its way across a milkweed plant, and I couldn’t stop watching it. The contrast between the bold stripes and the soft yellow blooms immediately caught my eye. It was one of those quiet moments where everything slows down, and you realize how much detail is happening right in front of you. Getting this close and capturing it mid-movement felt simple, natural, and really satisfying.
I drove roughly two hours outside of Kansas City just to get far enough away from the city lights for this shot. Standing out there in the dark, watching the sky and waiting, I was able to capture Comet C/2023 A3 as it moved across the night. As the sun slowly set, I started to watch the comet appear on the horizon. Seeing something that distant with my own eyes, and then getting it in a photo, made the whole drive completely worth it. Moments like this are why I love getting out and chasing the night sky.
I remember I almost didn’t get this shot. I woke up late, I didn’t know exactly where I wanted to be but right as the sun started to hit the mountains on this crisp December morning in Estes Park, I found my spot. The water was frozen in some areas and foggy in others, the mountains looked refreshed with sun on their side.
A stunning nighttime photograph of the Kansas City skyline, featuring the iconic Bartle Hall pylons glowing bright red and vibrant city lights reflecting across downtown. The illuminated building displays a Kansas City Chiefs arrowhead design, adding bold team spirit to the urban landscape. Long-exposure light trails from passing traffic create dynamic motion in the foreground, while the sharp architectural lines of downtown KC stand out against a deep blue sky. This high-resolution image captures the energy, pride, and beauty of downtown Kansas City at night—perfect for showcasing KC architecture, cityscape photography, and Chiefs pride.
